Memebrs of the iPhone cult, unite!
I’m an iPhone-using, TechCrunch-reading, Wired-subscribing mellinial geek. There, I said it. I’m a geek. I stray for a while, and focus on music and art. I try my best, but I can’t help it. I’m a nerd. And I’m perfectly fine with it.
So, in the interest of all things nerdy, I’m going to tell you how excited I am about the iPhone 3G. The primary thing that bummed me out about the prospect of Apple releasing a new iPhone, was the notion that i would be ’stuck’ with the old one. The reality is, I’ve been absolutely dependent and addicted to my iPhone since the moment I got it. It’s been absolutely absurd. Embarrassing, sometimes. However, when I heard that the iPhone 3G would be faster, I got excited. Then I thought, “Man. that means I won’t be able to sell my current iPhone to get the new one, ’cause the demand will be so low for this ‘old’ technology, and so high for the ‘new’ one, that I’ll just be stuck.”
Then I came across this post which lists the top 4 reasons current iPhone owners don’t need the upgrade. Primarily, the iPhone 2.0 software will be a free upgrade to all iPhones! That made me feel better. I’ll get the developer SDK, games, and a lot of other cool features. Then I read about 3G, and I was bummed again. Wi-Fi speeds without wi-fi?!?!? How could I possibly live without that?
So, I watched WWDC on apple.com (yes, all of it)… and I no longer feel bummed. Primarily because of one ‘feature’ of the iPhone 3G…
It’s $199!!!
I have jeans that cost that much. (okay, they’re very expensive jeans, but still…)
The iPhone 3G is not only faster, comes loaded with a ton of new features (like true GPS built into the maps), but it also costs less than the cheapest iPhone has cost the entire time it’s been out! Lame, meet awesome.
Now, I’ve got to also address the issue of press around Apple products in general. There are general complaints that Apple gets undue puff press around the industry. To this, I say bullshit. You show me another company that is perpetually working to increase their standards, reduce customer frustration, AND reduce price as effectively, aggressively, or with as much innovation and inspiration as Apple, and I’ll buy the argument. But it’s just not out there.
Apple is re-inventing the wheel. Over and over again. They’re making communication and work more enjoyable, more inspiring, and most importantly, easier. That deserves all the press they can get. Now, with the developer SDK, and the associated App store, they are making themselves the premier friend of the little guy. They’re already the biggest digital music distributor. They’re about to create a market for small-scale application distribution. So, I can claim that I, too, am a member of the iPhone cult, Michael. Glad to hear I’m in good company.
